Forward thinking Cardiologist named nation’s top physician executive

Pushing the field of medicine…

Eric Topol, an outspoken San Diego cardiologist who has been pressing for the use of wireless mobile devices and the sequencing of people’s genomes to improve patient care, has been named the most influential physician executive in the nation by a pair of industry magazines.

He also is deeply involved in personal genomics, pushing for the sequencing of people’s genes, especially for the purpose of diagnosing diseases that haven’t been identified by conventional means. The genomics industry has been growing rapidly because the cost of sequencing a genome has plummeted to about $3,500 and is expected to fall to $1,000 by the end of the year. Such sequencing can help scientists develop drugs that more effectively fight and prevent disease, and, over time, it will help physicians to better chose a drug for individual patients.

Topol also made headlines recently for his work on an experimental blood test that might be able to get a person up to two weeks notice that they are at serious risk of experiencing a heart attack. Scientists hope to eventually develop a wearable device that regularly samples a person’s blood, watching for an increase in the type of cells that indicate that a heart attack could occur.

FIRST - Multi-institutional Stem Cell Research Collaboration

The La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology has become the fifth organization in the prestigious Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, joining colleagues from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, The Scripps Research Institute, University of California, San Diego and the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in the first-of-its-kind multi-institutional stem cell research collaboration.

Slated to open its new collaborative research facility in November, the Sanford Consortium will marshal the intellectual resources of its five collaborating organizations – all world-leaders in life sciences – to improve human health through stem cell research.

“Cellular Journey” Exhibit: Explore Cells of the Human Body and Stem Cells

 “Cellular Journey” Exhibit

Opens Saturday, March 19, 2011
Explore Cells of the Human Body and Stem Cells

Want to learn more about Stem Cells.  Make plans to visit the new exhibit at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.

“Cellular Journey” is a Fleet-created exhibition that features a series of interactive exhibits designed to introduce you to human cell biology, the importance of stem cells and the potential impact of stem cells on medical research in the fields of regenerative and personalized medicine.

Don’t miss these hands-on exhibits within “Cellular Journey!”

You can use a microscope at the “From Tissues to Cells” exhibit to examine various human tissue samples. You’ll learn about four different types of tissues – epithelial, connective, muscle and nerve – and how they each carry out a specific function.

“Journey Inside a Cell,” using a unique virtual reality concept to explore what it looks like inside a human cell. The fly-through concept allows you to examine the cellular universe within the human body in-depth by venturing into specific parts of a cell. Get to know the inside of a human cell, and then launch a stem cell on its path to become a specific type of cell.

A realistic lab display will introduce you to the layout and functions of a typical stem cell research laboratory. Additional hands-on interactives give you the opportunity to explore some of the real life techniques scientists use in the lab when working with stem cells.

Learn about the three basic types of stem cells - embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells, and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to examine where they come from, why they are important and how they are used.
