Texas Board Approves Rules on Use of Stem Cells

The new rules allow doctors to perform stem cell procedures as long as they are done for research and receive approval from an institutional review board, which can be private and profit-making. The rules also require that patients sign informed consent forms.

The approval process, which took months, was set off by Gov. Rick Perry, who reported relief from back pain after being injected with his own stem cells last summer before he began his presidential bid. Mr. Perry directed his staff to help push through the legislation on which the new rules are based.

About Lawrence S.B. Goldstein
Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine; Investigator,
Howard Hughes Medical Institute, UCSD School of Medicine

Dr. Goldstein is researching Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive, incurable disease that robs people of their memory and ability to think and reason.  Currently, there is no effective treatment for this disease, and there is a tremendous need to better understand the cellular basis of Alzheimer’s disease so that such treatments can be developed.  Goldstein is studying key genetic clues that come from a rare familiar form of the disease, which suggest that early defects in the physical transport system responsible for long-distance movements of information in neurons can cause neuronal dysfunction.  This failure of the neurons is predicted to initiate a series of events that results in the classic plaques and tangles that characterize the disease.  Goldstein’s lab will use human embryonic stem cells to generate human neuronal models of hereditary Alzheimer’s disease in order to test various hypotheses about the cause of the disease, as well as test new drugs for its treatment.

Peyton Manning undergoes stem cell treatment in Europe

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has reportedly undergone a stem cell treatment in Europe because of a neck injury that is so far this season keeping him off of the field and on the sidelines, according to news reports. Manning is currently suffering from a bulging disk in his neck; he has undergone surgery several times this year to correct the injury.

Manning’s treatment is not approved in the United States, and involves using the four-time MVP’s own fat cells to regenerate the nerves around his neck, AOL Sporting News reported.

The New York Daily News reported that Manning underwent another neck surgery after undergoing the stem cell treatment.

Athletes are allowed to undergo stem cell therapies”unless a banned substance is used as part of the procedure,” an NFL spokesman told The Daily News.

Terrell Owens gets stem-cell treatment in South Korea

Owens is in South Korea on a three-day visit for stem-cell therapy on his surgically repaired ACL, according to The Korea Times, South Korea’s oldest english-language newspaper.

CAPTION
By Mark Zerof, US Presswire
Unable to garner any interest in free agency, Owens might be interested in speeding his recovery time from offseason surgery. Peyton Manning underwent a similar procedure in Europe to heal his surgically-repaired neck, according to a report.

Dr. Lee Jung-no, president of the Chaum Anti-Aging center, confirmed Owens’ visit to the newspaper.

“Mr. Owens starts with therapy Monday followed by the collecting and storing of his stem cells the next day,” Lee said.

The Times reports that the six-time Pro Bowler was recommended to Lee by renowned American surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

“We do have our branch hospital in the United States, and Dr. Andrews advised Owens to contact it first, which then led him to visit our office here,” Lee said.

Understanding Alzheimer’s: The Promise of Stem Cells

Catch our past guest, Dr. Larry Goldstein discussing Stem Cells and Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS).

Wednesday, March 23, 2011   : :   12:00 - 1:30 pm

Frontiers in Science & Technology: Understanding Alzheimer’s: The Promise of Stem Cells

Sponsored by Morrison & Foerster

presents: Understanding Alzheimer’s: The Promise of Stem Cells

This month, renowned researcher, scientific political activist and author of Stem Cells for Dummies, Dr. Larry Goldstein, will shed light on the future of treating neurodegenerative disorders, and the recent advances that have been achieved through innovative stem cell research. These diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), affect millions of people and are among the most devastating and emotionally wrenching of human ailments. Due to the complexity of the central nervous system, scientists are still struggling to understand the mechanisms that cause neuronal failure, and therefore, current treatment options are limited.

As Director of UC San Diego’s Stem Cell Program, Dr. Goldstein and his team have been studying the use of stem cells to create neurons that are predisposed to these disorders. By growing these neurons from stem cells, researchers believe these cells hold the key to boosting our understanding of the brain and nervous system. Ultimately, this research may lead to new predictive diagnostics and novel directions in drug development for these diseases.

PRESENTED BY:
Dr. Lawrence Goldstein
Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Professor, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine
Director, UC San Diego Stem Cell Program
Chair, Scientific Steering Committee, Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Scientists, engineers, physicians, healthcare leaders, venture capitalists, technology and life sciences professionals, services providers and business leaders.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Goldstein is a Distinguished Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), School of Medicine and Director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell Program. He is also an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). He has been with the UC San Diego School of Medicine since 1993. A UC San Diego alumnus, he received his B.A. degree in biology and genetics in 1976, and his Ph.D. degree in genetics from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1980. Dr. Goldstein did postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1980 to 1983 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983-1984. He was assistant, associate, and full professor at Harvard University in the Department of Cellular and Developmental Biology from 1984 to 1993, before moving to UC San Diego and HHMI. His awards include a Senior Scholar Award from the Ellison Medical Foundation, an American Cancer Society Faculty Research Award, the Loeb Chair in Natural Sciences when he was at Harvard University, election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the 2009 Public Service Award from the American Society for Cell Biology.

Dr. Goldstein’s work is supported by funding from HHMI, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. His research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of movement inside brain cells and how failures in the movement systems may lead to neurodegenerative diseases. His laboratory has discovered important links between transport processes and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s diseases.

Dr. Goldstein has had an active role in national science policy, having served on many public scientific advisory committees, in addition to serving as an expert commentator on the issue of stem cell research and biomedical research policy by print and broadcast media. He has testified on a number of occasions in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate about NIH funding and stem cell research. Dr. Goldstein also served as co-chair of the scientific advisory committee to the campaign for the Proposition 71 stem cell research initiative, which authorizes $3 billion in tax-free state bonds to fund stem cell research in California over 10 years. As a co-founder and consultant of the biotechnology company Cytokinetics, he has also had an active role in private industry where he has gained experience in translating scientific insights to new therapeutic approaches. Public understanding will be considerably improved with his recent well received book, Stem Cells for Dummies.

Stem Cell & Bankruptcy: Huff Po Article

Article by Huffinton Post regarding (embryonic) stem cell debate.

As you know, our population is living longer today. Modern medicine can keep people alive to seventy, eighty, ninety years of age now — but it does not cure them. Whatever chronic diseases they may have, they keep, and that means expensive care. This is not just about seniors, either; an estimated one hundred million Americans have chronic diseases; they are alive, but not well — existing, but not healthy.

and it is affecting another industry sector:

Now think of biomedicine, perhaps the fastest growing industry in America. In California, where stem cell research is enthusiastically supported, biomedicine is already the number two industry in the state — and growing so fast, a special law had to be passed (SB 471, Romero, the Stem Cell Research Education and Biomedical Training Act - see below) to make sure there were enough qualified workers to fill anticipated demand.

Those who oppose biomedical research — are opposing new jobs in a new industry.
